Genetic Terms

Heterogeneity-Is a word that signifies diversity.  A classroom consisting of people from lots of different backgrounds would be considered having the quality of heterogeneity.  The prefix hetero- means "other or different," while the prefix homo- means "the same."

Sera-plural of Serum.

Serum-1 a clear, watery animal fluid, as the yellowish fluid (blood serum) separating from a blood clot after coagulation 2 blood serum used as an antitoxin, taken from an animal inoculated for a specific disease

Coagulate- to cause (a liquid) to become somewhat firm; clot

Phenotype-The expression of a gene in traits or symptoms.

Aliquots- 1.a portion of a larger whole, especially a sample taken for chemical analysis or other treatment.  

Electrophoresis- 1. The migration of charged colloidal particles or molecules through a solution under the influence of an applied electric field usually provided by immersed electrodes.  Also called cataphoresis.  2. A method of separating substances, especially proteins, and analyzing molecular structure based on the rate of movement of each component in a colloidal suspension while under the influence of an electric field.

Transferrin- a protein of the beta globulin group that binds and transports iron in blood serum

Haptoglobin- a protein present in blood serum that binds to and removes free hemoglobin from the bloodstream

Polyacrylamide- a synthetic resin made by polymerizing acrylamide, especially a water-soluble polymer used to form or stabilize gels and as a thickening or clarifying agent

Peroxidase- an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of a particular substrate by hydrogen peroxide
